The Who Announce Hyde Park Show, Weller & Kaiser Chiefs Among Guests

The Who have announced that they will play Hyde Park in London next June as part of Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park 2015. Their special guests on the bill, on Friday June 26, will be Paul Weller, Kaiser Chiefs and Johnny Marr, with other acts to be announced. Tickets go on general sale this Thursday (20).

The UK leg of the band’s ‘Who Hits 50!’ tour begins on November 30 at the SECC in Glasgow, culminating with two shows at London’s 02 Arena on December 17 and 18. After the first of The Who’s tour North American tours next year, which begin in April and September, they return home for previously-announced dates at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on June 21 and 3Arena in Dublin on the 23rd, now followed by the Hyde Park date three days later.

This will be the fourth, and possibly final, time that the band have played in the famous royal park. They performed ‘Quadrophenia’ there in 1996, returning in 2005 for the Live8 extravaganza and again a year later for the festival then called Hyde Park Calling. They’re the second act to be confirmed for next year’s shows in the park, with Taylor Swift already announced for June 27.

Here are Pete and Roger talking about their memories of previous Who appearances in Hyde Park, and how they feel about the location:

Weller’s longstanding connection to The Who dates back to their major influence on him as a songwriter, but he has also played with Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey at Teenage Cancer Trust shows. So too have Kaiser Chiefs, who performed ‘Pinball Wizard’ at the Olympics Closing Ceremony in 2012; singer Ricky Wilson also played at the ‘Who Hits 50!’ tribute show at Shepherds Bush Empire last week. Johnny Marr, for his part, once owned a 1960s Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar that he bought from Townshend, and lent to Noel Gallagher, who played it in Oasis’ ‘Live Forever’ video.
