Reggae music’s worldwide ambassador would have been 70 years old today. Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in the Jamaican village of Nine Mile, from which humble origins he took his music and his culture to the world in a way that only a handful of artists have been able to do.
Bob’s birthday is the inspiration for the global launch of some exciting social media activity, designed to spread harmony through the world just as he did. In the #Share1Love campaign, Marley fans are being encouraged to upload a video on Vine, Instagram or via direct upload here, demonstrating how they share love with the world, and encouraging their friends to do the same.
For each person that uploads a video via those platforms with the #Share1Love hashtag, Videoo (which connects social videos via hashtags) will donate $1 to help the non-profit organization charity: water bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. The campaign will run until the summer, after which footage that has been submitted will be used in the creation of a music video for one of two anthems by Bob and the Wailers, ‘Is This Love’ or ‘Could You Be Loved.’ Sample videos are available to watch here.
The campaign is the latest acknowledgement of both the musical and cultural contribution of a man whose mark on society has only increased since his untimely passing nearly 34 years ago. The new movement will espouse the spirit of one of his most famous songs, ‘One Love,’ and ensure that his memory burns brighter than ever.
