Chrissie Hynde has remade her classic Christmas hit of the 1980s with the Pretenders, ‘2000 Miles,’ and released a new video to go with the updated version.
Hynde recorded the new rendition of her composition in Stockholm with producer Björn Yttling, when she was completing her current, first solo album ‘Stockholm,’ released by Caroline International in June. The stripped-down, largely piano and vocal rendition of the hit has already been an iTiunes Christmas single of the week in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Scandinavia and Italy.
The original ‘2000 Miles,’ produced by Chris Thomas, was the Pretenders’ ninth UK chart hit, charting in November 1983 and reaching No. 15 in Christmas week that year. The song has gone on to be covered by artists such as KT Tunstall, Natalie Imbruglia and Coldplay.
After an extensive North American tour from the end of October to the beginning of December, Hynde played a short UK itinerary which finished last Tuesday (December 16) at Koko in London. The closing gig had her playing a combination of new material from ‘Stockholm’ and Pretenders favourites including ‘Kid,’ ‘Night In My Veins,’ ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ and ‘Back On The Chain Gang,’ Following a first encore including ‘I Go To Sleep,’ she signed off for Christmas with, naturally, ‘2000 Miles.’
